Setting up a USB Dial Up Networking (DUN) connection with a Windows Mobile smartphone

Article ID: 43333

Windows Vista: This software is not compatible with Windows Vista. In order to use Dial Up Networking, we suggest you connect via Bluetooth wireless (available for Treo 750). See your Treo 750 User Guide for details about setting up Bluetooth DIal Up Networking.

What is the USB Dial Up Networking update?

You can connect your Palm Treo 750 smartphone and your computer using the USB synchronization cable and then access the Internet from your computer using your smartphone as a wireless modem. This is called USB dial-up networking, or USB DUN.

What do I need to know before I start?

To use USB DUN, you need to download and install the required software on both your computer and your smartphone, and then enter the connection settings. These steps are described here. You need to perform these setup steps only once; after that, you can easily access the Internet from your computer by following the steps in 'Using a USB DUN connection at other times', in the setting up your smartphone wireless modem guide below.

NOTE: If you receive or place a phone call while a USB DUN connection is active, the call goes through, but the DUN connection is terminated. This is true for both GPRS/EDGE and UMTS networks. If you are on a UMTS network (as indicated by a 'U' in the title bar of the Today screen), you can restart the connection while on the call so that you can send and receive data even while you are talking.

NOTE: If you have a push e-mail solution set up on your smartphone, such as a push e-mail solution from your network operator or Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync®, push e-mail does not take place while the USB DUN connection is active.
